Food or Home Care? Debt Hits the Vulnerable
Thousands of vulnerable people in the UK are facing severe debt problems, leading them to having to go without food and heating in order to pay the soaring costs of home care services provided by local authorities.
New charity research shows that many are having to restrict their household budgets for essential items in order to pay for the home care which assists things like dressing, washing and eating. More and more are faced with having to cancel their home care because they can no longer afford to pay or restrict themselves to services which most of us would deem as essential.
Wha’ts more concerning is that the local council who decides how much to charge, which mean that the cost is substantially different throughout Britain. In some areas these services are free but others can charge over £17 an hour.
The Charities report that there is a 273% price increase over nine years for those 200,000 people who are charged for care services at home.
