Some personal debt statistics for July

Below are some of the statistics compiled by CreditAction for the UK – July 2009.


Statistics for today alone:

  • Average household debt is down to £0.77; January’s average household debt was £11.11
  • 331 people will wake up to a new financial status: bankruptcy.
  • The average consumer saves £2.96
  • The last 3 months of 2008 saw 2,324 new Consumer County Court Judgments (CCJs)
  • The Government pays £106m towards the UK’s net debt of £775bn.
  • Retailers and financial institutions decline 33,600 credit applications.
  • Citizen advice bureaus deal with 7,423 new debt problems.
  • 305 landlords will make possession orders and county courts will deal with 397 landlord possession claims.
  • It will cost motorists £16.80 to run their vehicles.
  • The total value of today’s number of card purchase transactions is £1.03bn.

Further Debt Statistics:

  • The total amount of UK personal debt at the end of May 2009 is £1,459bn.
  • The average UK household debt – excluding mortgages – is £9,305. But households with unsecured loans have a higher average – £21,640.
  • Households with mortgages have an average debt of £58,360.
  • The average UK adult owes £30,480. This figure includes mortgages.
  • The 11.1m households with mortgages owe their banks an average of £110,480.
  • The last 12 months had a decline in consumer credit lending to individuals, currently at £233bn, which is down 2.3%.
  • The average UK adult owes £4,860 on various types of credit, such as cards, motor and retail finance deals, overdrafts and unsecured personal loans.
  • In May 2009, Britons created £1 million more debt every 77 minutes. In January, Britons created £1 million more debt every 5.3 minutes.
  • The last 12 months had £66.2bn worth of interest repayments on personal debt. Each household’s share being £2,650 a year.
